Debbie is now in Timau, Kenya and will post periodic updates on the progress of the library construction. Please click on "progress" to see how the library is coming along."
My name is Debbie Schachner, I am walking across the United States and would like to share my mission with you.
From January till October 2003 I volunteered in Timau, Kenya, teaching students who never before had the opportunity for an education. I experienced hospitality, true generosity and learned what it really means to love one another. When you love others you will do whatever you can to improve their circumstances and bring greater opportunities to them.
After a couple months of my arrival to Timau, I realized that nine months would not be enough time for me to help as I wanted to. I yearned to positively impact the entire community, to empower each person to improve their life as well as the lives of others. Due to the Kenyan government implementing free primary education, I felt that the most beneficial action I could take would be to build a public library.
My primary goal as I hike the American Discovery Trail (ADT) from California to Delaware is to encourage people to do more with what we have. We have so many opportunities available to us; I feel it is important to share what we have in order to lift others up. As I hike across the country I want to motivate people to search inside themselves to find their own talents and passions, then to take action by applying those gifts to the needs they find in the community. Everyone can do something!
Secondly, I will be raising funds for the construction of the library. There are so many people in the world that live with a harsh reality, a daily struggle to survive, that I am compelled to do what I can. Books allow hopes to be built and dreams to be realized. I cannot walk away from them, so I am walking for them. Once I complete the ADT and raise the $47,000 necessary to complete the first phase of the library, I will return to Timau, Kenya, as a volunteer with the AWE Foundation (Action for Water and Education) to begin construction of the library.
If you are able to support the AWE Foundations library project I would be most grateful. Please donate with confidence, knowing that 100% of your donation will be used for the library project. I spend no money on overhead due to the fact that AWE volunteers receive no financial compensation and all overhead comes out of my own pocket.
