4/27/2007 Spring is here!
Debbie got back on the trail again April 21, 2007. Howard, that's me. Got behind. I'll have pictures in the gallery of her departure as soon as I get the upload working. By the way, If you meet Debbie on trail and have a favorite picture, send it to howard@imakesense.com for consideration on the website.
The first "Where's Debbie" ran out of space!

I am home for the winter! I walked from St.Louis, across the
Mississippi, and straight to my parents home. What a lovely day! My
mother, sister and Aunt joined me in St.Louis, then when we got to the
bridge a group of about 30 people stood holding signs and American
flags and proceeded to walk across the bridge with me. I had a personal
escort of 3 cars thru East St.Louis, plus the addition of a police car.
It is a day I want to hold in my heart forever.

Hello! I plan to be home to my parents in O'Fallon, Illinois on
Saturday, in 3 days! On Saturday I will cross the Eads bridge over
the mighty Mississippi with a small group of people and will walk home.
Good timing because it is suppossed to snow tomorrow.

I have had some company while walking. My mother came out for a day
last week and then as I passed near my aunt and uncles home my
aunt walked with me while my uncle shuttled us. Soon I will be off the
smooth walking Katy trail and into the St.Louis area. I will miss
walking all day but look forward to being warm and being able to work
this winter.

I am in Booneville and am happy to be on a trail again, eager to be rid of the need to wear bright orange shirts. I felt like a big pumpkin! Now I will be taking the Katy trail from here to St.Charles. Have been meeting so many incredible people who are welcoming me into their homes and into their hearts, what a beautiful world we live in...there is beauty everywhere!
"When death, the great reconciler, has come, it is never our tenderness that we regret, but our severity." - George Eliot

I am in the town of Marshall. I woke up at 3:30 this morning to walk about 7 miles to get to the 7 AM meeting of the optimist club on time. I stargazed as I walked and couldn't help but smile and praise God whenever I saw a shooting star. I got to the meeting with about 2 minutes to spare and with a little surprise guest. Yesterday as I was walking I had 3 dogs join with me, the littlest dog continued walking with me and then slept outside my tent barking at anything that made a noise. A good guard dog under 5 pounds. After I showed a lady about where the dog started following me, she said she would take it back to its owner for me.

In Lexington. I will be here a couple of days ...a very nice town. This weekend was the apples arts and antiques festival.

I have just walked into Lexington, the air is crisp and it is sunny with a beautiful blue sky! I have made it thru Kansas City and am happy to be on quieter roads. Todays walk took me past farms and the Missouri river, which I will be following for almost all of the rest of Missouri. I had a very close encounter with a German Shepherd who jumped over his fence, I yelled at him and thankfully he slinked back around the yard. Whew!

I have walked into a new state! I am in Kansas city and have walked to the state line today. I am visiting a couple of friends in town and then will resume walking in a couple days. The leaves are turning red and dropping their leaves, it is beautiful walking weather.

I am in Lawrence, Kansas, home of Kansas university and the Jayhawks. I walked into town yesterday and stayed on campus at a girls scholarship hall. I will be staying in town until Thursday afternoon speaking to the various service clubs and then will continue to Kansas City.

I am in Osage City, Kansas, and am enjoying this cooler weather and the beauty of the Flint Hills. The sumac is bright red while the fields are oceans of yellow flowers. Kansas is definitely not all flat.

I arrived in Council Grove this morning and spoke to the Rotary club. I am going to Manhattan today to visit a friend for the weekend and then will return back to Council Grove. I have gotten lucky and been told that the postmaster lives in Manhattan so he will take me back and forth..how perfect! I will return on Monday and then speak to the other two service clubs and then continue to walk on Tuesday. This area is the flint hills, it reminds me of southern Illinois with the rolling land, large oak, maple and sycamore trees.

I am in the town of Herington. The air is getting cooler and new plants abound. Purple gayfeather flower, sumac, and elderberry are appearing. Yesterday there were alot of caterpillars on the move and the cows seem to be happier and less nervous in Kansas, a herd followed me along the fence line smiling, swishing their tails back and forth and kicking up their hoofs.

I am in Ellinwood, Kansas for a couple days to speak to the students and the service clubs. Last weekend I stayed with the Dominican sisters in Great Bend and it just so happened to be that they were celebrating their 50th anniversary of serving in Nigeria. What an inspirational group of women! It was so enjoyable to hear their stories about Africa and feel so warmly welcomed.

I am in Larned. Due to all the rain there is a healthy population of mosquitos that are feeding on of me. Thankfully I have recieved a wonderful gift of a long sleeved shirt in the mail from a friend. Here is a neat quote that reminds me of the many people I am thankful for who have shown me hospitality and kindness on my journey. " It is not what you have that is your greatness, it is what you can give."

Jambo, hello, from Kinsley, Kansas. I am halfway across the US! This morning I started walking into the sunrise from Spearville and watched as the windmills dwindled in size. These windmills are huge, I could still see them from 10 miles away. I am now at the library and just walked next door and discovered a sorority meeting just beginning. In a couple minutes they will let me share my mission with them. I must take every opportunity I can get!
